Current Skincare Favourites

Happy Sunday friends!

I don’t know about you guys, but after a long week, my skin could use some nice pampering.

So what did I do last night?? That’s right, I scrubbed off all of the make-up and decided to give my skin some love. AHHH, it felt so nice! Skincare routine with towel

Let me tell you that for the first time in forever, I am actually in LOVE with the products that I am using in my skincare routine (the retinol serum has changed my life). So last night, after I pampered my skin, I wondered “why am I holding back with this information!? If it has helped me so much I am sure it could be beneficial to others!” I honestly tell my friends about most of these products every chance I can.

To be real, I have struggled with my skin for the past few years, starting in university. As someone who had good skin all throughout middle school and high school, I didn’t know where to start. Even while maintaining healthy lifestyle my skin did not cooperate with me.

Finding good skincare products has, at times, felt like throwing darts blindly at a board and hoping they will land in the right places. Trust me, I know what that feels like. And, while I am definitely no skincare expert, I thought that these products might help you as well!

Here we go! A step-by-step of my process along with a quick outline of what each product does and why I love them.

Skincare routine - the essentials

STEP 1: TAKE IT OFF

First things first, I go and take off all of my make-up with the Marcelle make-up remover pads. These are pre-soaked in micellar water so they are convenient and great for at  home or travelling. My make-up comes off with a lot less scrubbing since starting to use these, and I get it all off (no more leftover bits smudging around my eyes).

After I have removed most of the eye/eye-brow/lipstick make up, I then take a pea-sized amount of the Amore Pacific Treatment Cleansing Foam and rub it into a good lather *scrub scrub scrub*.  This face cleanser is my favourite. It is so soft and gentle, but extremely effective. The smell took me a bit to get used to, but I know some people who are obsessed with it. Whether you end up loving the smell or not, it’s worth it. I promise your skin will feel soft and clean after; none of that tight painful feeling. YAY! Also every one of my friends that have borrowed this cleanser ended up buying it for themselves.

STEP 2: BYE-BYE DEAD SKIN

Next, we exfoliate. I only do this 2-3 time a week, and I like to save one of those times for when I am going to put on a face mask. Exfoliating helps preps the skin so that the mask can go deeper, allowing the skin to absorb more of it’s goodness. The point of an exfoliator is to remove dead skin cells. When we don’t remove the dead skin it starts to build up causing our skin to look dull and causing our pores to clog. My favourite exfoliator is the Ole Henriksen’s Transforming Walnut Scrub. This is a pretty intense exfoliator, so scrub gently. My second favourite exfoliator (also by Ole Henriksen) is the Pore Balance Facial Sauna Scrub. This one has a nice cooling sensation with the scent of peppermint and eucalyptus.

STEP 3: MASK IT

Now the fun part! Choosing a mask. This is all dependant on your skin and what it needs at the moment. However, It is always good to use a cleansing mask at least once a week. My absolute fav is Glamglow’s Supermud. First off, it smells amazing! It has an earthy eucalyptus smell which automatically makes you feel sooooo relaxed. You can use as little or as much as you want, some people even like using it as a spot treatment. As soon as it goes on you can feel the cooling of the eucalyptus. The best part is that as it starts to dry you can actually see where it is pulling the oil out of our skin! You have to leave this on for at least 20 minutes, but you can leave it on longer if you wish. When you are done remove it with warm water.

Sidenote: masks will work better after exfoliating and a warm shower (or you can put a warm wet cloth on your face to open the pores).

Keep in mind that the Supermud mask is pricey, however if you want something similar for less money the Origins Clear Improvements mask is a great option.

STEP 4: TIME TO TONE

Toner: this is a step I overlooked for years! Toner helps remove extra dirt, oil, and makeup that may have been left behind. It also can help balance the pH of your skin and helps tighten those pesky pores back up! I just ran out of my toner, so unfortunately, it is not included in the picture above. However, my favourite toner is the Thayers Witch Hazel (I like the lavender). This stuff is great for so many things! All you do is add it to a cotton pad and apply it in upward strokes.

Note: I like to use alcohol free toners as the ones with alcohol in them are typically very drying to the skin!

STEP 5: SERUM

Ahhhh, okay. My newest and favourite addition to my skincare routine is the Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM (obviously this is only to be used at night).Retinol is great for helping stimulate the production of new skin cells. This helps reduce acne, pigmentation/discolouration, and fine lines and wrinkles. Talk about a miracle serum, because this stuff does it all. Some people can be sensitive to retinol, which is why I love this fusion. It has a lower concentrate than some retinol oils and it is blended with vitamin A and C. I have found my skin looking smoother and healthier. Not only that, but I am breaking out way less, and even when I do break out it clears up SO FAST! Retinol can be a bit pricey, I believe that this serum is around 80-90 dollars, Good news, however, is that I found it for 40 dollars at costco (which is still a bit costly, but this stuff will last for a long time because you don’t need much).

STEP 6: HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE

After the serum has absorbed into my skin I seal it in with some moisturizer. I do have a few different moisturizers that I use depending on how my skin is behaving. However, my favourite one is Glamglow’s Waterburst Hydrated Glow Moisturizer. I just want to say that I LOVE the smell. This moisturizer is extremely lightweight, but so effective. For my skin I usually only use it once a day (more when it is reaaallyyy dry out). If I use this in the morning I will use a different kind of moisturizer at night, and if I use this at night then vice-versa. This has hyaluronic acid in it, which we already naturally have in our body. Hyaluronic acid helps your skin look more supple and glow-y. It also helps reduce redness, wrinkles, and sometimes acne.

Alright, so there you have it, all of my current favourite skincare products for a night of pampering (or whenever really).

I really hope this is helpful to you in some way!

Now go treat yourself with an at-home facial, you deserve it!
