The Simple Life

Is it just me, or does the concept of simple or simplicity,  get walked over time and time again? I can’t help but feel that simple has picked up an unfairly attributed bad rap.

I’m currently sitting here watching the big golden sun in the sky sink behind a faint mountain outline. The birds flutter and whir gently through the trees just beyond my patio, and on the patio the music is softly dancing from the speaker, around Wayde and I, and spilling out into the world; colliding with the sweet songs from the birds.  A beautiful cacophony of sounds fills the air. I can see the shimmering reflection of the still-budding trees in the pond below.

In this moment my life is nothing but simple, and I am so head-over-heels in love with this moment. We can get so caught up in the next thing, we get increasingly busy in the hustle/grind/whatever you want to call it, that stopping to intentionally pause is getting not only more rare, but also increasingly more difficult.

Here is what I truly believe: the simple moments are the glue of a beautiful life.

You can desire, strive for, and even accumulate the big; the grand; the sought-after; the expensive. But what is it all worth if we don’t stop and enjoy life? What do we gain if we lose the important moments along the way? We try to climb to the top so fast, and then when we get there is it worth it? Do we still have the things that truly matter?

There is nothing wrong with dreams or working hard, just remember that along the way it is necessary to pause and soak in those precious simple moments. Turn the phone, laptop, TV, and all other devices off.

Sit and enjoy what you have. Enjoy the people in your life. Enjoy the big and small details of what your life is in that moment. Soak it in, and use it to refocus and refuel your heart.

Start enjoying the simple. Hey, and while you’re at it, stop putting so much pressure on yourself! No matter who you are, or where you are at in life, if you are putting unreasonable and unnecessary pressure on yourself you will miss the simple beauty around you.

You are where you are. You are building, growing, and learning. Breathe. Let it go. Stop stressing it. I know I CONSTANTLY have to remind myself of the importance of taking it in and being present where I’m at (and leave the stress and self-imposed pressure behind). I can get so caught up, or start feeling down, because I am not where I think I should be at, or I’m not as “good” as I want to be. And when I start thinking this way it instantly zaps the enjoyment out of my life!

So, this long weekend Monday as we are preparing to step back into the grind (or maybe you didn’t actually ever step away from it), here is my professional advice: chill out, dude.

This advice is for you from a place of understanding, because I often struggle with intentionally stopping and being mindfully present in the moment. However, when I do, I am NEVER EVER disappointed. I feel so much more joyful, content, and mentally healthy when I enjoy the simple moments in life. As we step into the week, let’s not let go of the bliss of the weekend.

In fact, I have a challenge for you. I am challenging you to set a chunk of time aside today (at least half an hour, but try for a full hour), or another day this week, to turn off the devices, find your happy place, and just enjoy the simple life for a little while. And after reflect on how that time impacted you! What you felt, thought, or realized during or after.

Note: this does not necessarily mean you have to be alone in that time! You can enjoy the simple moments and be intentionally present with people. I don’t want you sitting alone staring at a wall! Get creative with how you enjoy the simple life. You could try journaling, listening to music, laying in the grass, going for a walk, hanging out with friends and family, volunteering, etc.  You do you!

No phones, no devices, no “doing it for the gram”. Just be there. Just be present.

  1. Thanks for the reminder. I needed to hear the line, “You are where you are.” So many times I want life to be different. It’s not. It is what it is. Be happy where I am. I am blessed. This was my fav paragraph. Thanks Sonja. ❤
